Non-partisan vote on Michigan Ballott
With much of the focus on the Presidential race, I want to make sure I contact clients, friends and family to ask for help on races closer to home. Although hotly contested and incredibly funded, the race for the Michigan Supreme Court is on the non-partisan portion of the ballot. This means that a straight ticket vote will not cover this race. Voters need to go to the end of the ballot and vote separately for Judges and Proposals.
The Michigan Supreme Court effects Michigan citizens as much as, if not more than, any other seat in any other branch of government. The very conservative Judges who make up the present majority, have had a devastating impact on me, my law practice and my clients, in consistently siding against individual’s right to a trial by jury. I am not referring to the right to bring cases to Court and I am not referring to the quality of cases brought. I am referring to our Constitutional right to have a jury of our peers hear our dispute, and make a decision on the viability and legitimacy of our claim.
This is why, regardless of your Party affiliation, I ask you to vote for the Michigan Supreme Court to restore fairness, equality and your right to settle disputes with a trial by jury. If you have not needed to pursue a claim in the Courts, you probably have little insight into the devastating effect the present Supreme Court majority has had on your rights. Take it from someone who tries to help Michigan citizens in the Court system on a daily basis, we need change!
The Michigan Supreme Court decides a wide array of cases that deeply affect citizens’ lives, from who gets access to the civil justice system to issues of equality and work place protection. I urge you to vote for Judge Connie Marie Kelley, Judge Shelia Johnson, and family advocate Bridget Mary McCormack.
