Should I get Uninsured Motorist (or UM) coverage?
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage and is it worth getting?
Uninsured Motorist coverage (or UM for short) is a coverage you should absolutely make sure is part of your current automobile insurance policy, and if not, you can add it for a relatively small amount. UM coverage protects you in the event that you are involved in an automobile accident and the other driver is uninsured. Then, you can turn to your own insurance policy for coverage. Basically, your own insurance company steps in and pays your pain and suffering claim.
Why is this a good idea? Supposed you are involved in a serious car accident. This accident was not your fault. The person who struck you did not carry auto insurance. Now you are seriously injured. You life is no longer what it was. Your work and family are impacted. You want to be compensated for your pain and suffering but have no where to turn. That is where your own unisured motorist coverage comes into play.
